Comms adapter on the cheap

I decided to build my own adapter to connect my leather helmets comms gear to a computer after seeing the prices some companies were quoting. This cost me about 4-5% of their price.

I started with an extension cable that came with my helmet -

I then removed the female socket from this (be careful not to rmove the pins) and soldered a 4 core wire (sound card to CD drive wire in my case) to it. I soldered a microphone and headphone plug on the other end (these came from a spare headset I had). Pics of the wire and plugs follow -

I used a wiring diagram from my manual to work out the connections -

Finally I connected it all to the pc and it works fine, especially the laringophones. The only problem I found was the bass was distorting the sound quite badly, but turning it down to 10% solved it.

If you can't find an extension cable, I believe the plug from a Swedish helmet is compatible. It's shown here on the right alongside an adapter made by Headset Services -
