Hello,
Were Soviet pilots ever issued with a case for their PO-1M goggles? I've looked around the Web, but I can't seem to find any reference to one.
Perhaps they returned them to the cardboard box the goggles originally came in at the end of the day? Or kept them atop their flight helmet?
I ask about a case because I have a pair of PO-1M goggles that I use regularly and am anxious to protect. Putting them back into their original cardboard box isn't really practical for me because the goggles go into a soft-sided bag that gets thrown around quite a bit. So I desire a case that is impact-resistant.
I'm sure I can find something on the civilian market that might work, but I'd prefer a Russian-manufactured case that was specifically made for the PO-1M goggles if one is available.
Also: I'm familiar with the stock sun lenses that come with the goggles. From what I've been told, the 15% sticker on the lenses indicates that they admit only 15% of the light (meaning that they block 85% of it).
However, I've recently been made aware that there are 2% lenses available as well. Does anyone know what specific application the 2% lenses were used for? I'm guessing that they were designed to be used by pilots flying directly towards the sun, but that's just a guess.
The 15% lenses are so effective at blocking out light that I'm quite curious as to what the 2% lenses might have been used for. Another guess would be that lenses that dark might have been used by pilots to help adapt their eyes to low-level light conditions before night vision gear was available.
However, these are just guesses and it would be nice to have a definitive answer from someone with firsthand knowledge. Anyone?
